Ugh! Sickish. I have a sore throat and what feels like the start of a cold. I hate being sick! I get all huffy about it. As I was getting ready for work this morning, it became increasingly clear that I was not feeling good. So now I'm curled up in bed with tea, my computer, the book Fifteen by Beverly Cleary for an old times sake, comfort read, and I have the latest by Julia Glass The Whole World Over. She has another new one coming out tomorrow, though.

It may be time for a little nap.

no, no, don't be sick. i could understand sickness if there were any sort of entertainment value to it. but really, it's no fun at all. cut that out.

you do comfort reads...i always do comfort movies. either back to the future II or french films where sad pretty people say sad pretty things. comforting, for some reason.

get well.

Yay! My new favorite writer. Thank you for wishing me good health.

I know. Being sick has absolutely zero entertainment value, but a very high annoyance factor, especially in the summer. Who gets a cold in the summer?!? Hmph. I will cut it out as soon as possible.

I have comfort movies too. But, I mean, they're ones like When Harry Met Sally and Bridget Jones's Diary. They don't require much focus, and I can be a total sucker for neat happy endings (ok, not only when I'm ill). My strangest comfort movie is Eyes Wide Shut. I haven't watched it in forever, but I used to all the time when I couldn't sleep. The story itself is not comforting in any possible way, but I loved the glow of the Christmas lights throughout. THAT'S what did it for me. The lighting. Just watching scenes with the soft lights would make me feel cozy and sleepy. It was a weird phase.

You'll have to recommend some good sad french movies to add to the mix.

i watched eyes wide shut several times in the theater just to see the lighting. all of that glowing fuzziness...in nearly every scene. inside, outside...everywhere the character went, muted candy colors. purr.

i usually watch godard, but it's hard to know what to recommend. all time favorite french comfort films are both by jacques tati. "mon uncle" and the follow up, "playtime". maybe you've seen them. tati directs, stars...both films are funny, sad. tati. i get the feeling you might like his on-screen persona.

i used to try and make friends watch kubrick films. eyes wide shut, 2001, all of the good ones. no one was ever interested. when one friend viewed the first 20 minutes of 2001 and said, "So...this is about monkeys in space?" I gave up.

Nope, I haven't seen any of those french films, so I'll add them to the list. Funny-sad is just my thing.

I'm glad someone else felt the same about Eyes Wide Shut, because people didn't really get it when I explained that I liked watching a movie simply for the lighting. Honestly, I can't claim to be a Kubrick fan. I pretty much know just that one movie, although some of the others sound interesting. I guess I've seen parts of the Shining. I could probably handle 2001, but I think A Clockwork Orange, for example, will be too much in terms of violence. I might be a Kubrick dud too!

"clockwork orange" is to be avoided, extremely violent. you need happy-meg things. "mon uncle" is fun but not perfect. i just like it because it's a good introduction to the tati character (who is always very gentle...no violence). and the film is a good lead in to "playtime" which is muchly perfect. woo hoo.

also, i was reading about your interest in spectrum issues. tati has a very intense sensory awareness. "playtime" looks and feels like the viewpoint of a character experiencing sensory overload. it's visually complex, uses sounds in an odd way. it's a great way to experience reality from that perspective.

hope you're well, feeling better. (and thank you for all of your nice words lately; i never know how people might react to the posts, so i appreciate your meg-thoughts).
