Today I worked out on my cheapy-beepy elliptical trainer, and then I met up with the lovely girls at the lovely Chocolati in Wallingford for an incredibly rich, delicious, super chocolatey mocha and to play catch up before heading off to the Guild to see Becoming Jane where, I might add, I enjoyed good, salty popcorn and a coke. It was a perfect afternoon of all goods - company, food and movie, not to mention exercise that I use to rationalize my food choices.
Becoming Jane is a pretty film (and not just for James McAvoy, but Hubba!) that easily pulls you into the soul-wrenching heartbreak of a great love that is blocked forever from growing into the beauty it promises. Even though I knew a little bit about Jane Austen's story, and my impression is that this movie takes quite a bit of liberty with the facts, I still couldn't help but feel the injustice of life and disappointment of lost love for her. Having the happiness you always dreamed of at your fingertips and realizing, ultimately, you have no choice but to let it go is completely and utterly unfair. It's so easy from the outside to try to wrap it up neatly with a bow by saying things like, "It just wasn't meant to be," but somewhere inside of us we are painfully familiar with the true mess, isolation and crushing drama of surviving, as we ultimately do, a not meant to be situation. This movie does an excellent job of portraying what it's like to live through having a part of ourselves broken open.
Yes, I cried.
Of course, Becoming Jane isn't all sorrow and gloom. There is humor and fun. All the characters are likable in their own way. The scenery is gorgeous, and I love the fashion of that time. Also, you can see the silver lining in her later success as a writer, and the film makes connections between Jane's life and the influences on her work. But, even with that whispering in my head, I still stubbornly wish she could have had it all. I think she deserved it, and isn't that what we all hope for?
I picked up a copy of FLM and see so many other movies coming out that look interesting to me. Goody! 2 Days in Paris, Ira & Abby, Penelope, Lady Chatterley (book I adore), The Ten, Summer '04...Plus, saw a preview for Elizabeth "The Golden Age" which stars Clive Owen. I must say I find him very, very attractive and, at this point, will pretty much see anything with Clive Owen in it. Rarr!
"Is Megan in need of a man?" you may be wondering.
I am wondering if it's possible to become addicted to Pop-Tarts. After not having them for years, I bought a couple of boxes on sale at Safeway last week, and now my brain is focused on one thing all the time. Pop-Tarts. I wake up thinking about when I can have my next fix, which is scaring me a little.
Keep sending your dating/relationship rhymes my way, and I'll post them.
Molly and Trav arrive soon!
