You see, Em is in the process of moving out of her apartment in Fremont, because it is, like everything else in Fremont, undergoing conversion into very expensive condos. At this rate, a cardboard box tossed out in front of the Troll is going to cost you a pretty penny to move into, but whatevs. Anyway, Em found another apartment and is moving this weekend. In preparation for leaving, she and the other soon to be evicted residents decided to have a yard sale, and someone put the J out for free.
It turns out everyone likes the J, but no one wants to commit to taking it. Comments I've heard about it are:
OK, well, most people first ask, "Where did the J come from?" Then they follow up with:
"The J rocks, but I don't have space for it."
"It's too bad the J is such an ugly color. Do you think it could be spray painted?"
"If only there were other letters with the J to create my initials, then I could take it."
"The J would make a nice plant stand if I had the right spot for it." (most popular comment)
"Hmmm. Who could I give the J to? Do I know anyone whose name starts with j?"
Em and I have contemplated uses for the J, as well. We could incorporate it into our current mug tossing, etc. business plan, or we could scrap that, cart the J around in a radio flyer at the Fremont Market, and charge peeps a dollar to have their pic taken with it. Tough call. We've also thought about people we could gift the J. My ex's name starts with j, so I guess I could leave it in front of his apartment door and affix a post-it saying "thanks for everything." But, I mean, I moved on from that relationship a long time ago, so I don't see much point. What message would the J really be sending? We thought about randomly placing it on people's doorsteps, ringing the doorbell, and running away. Instead of May Day, it's J Day...
I just don't know. If you have any ideas for the J, I'm listening.
This evening my friend Amy and I "played tennis." I feel like I have to put that in quotes because neither one of us knows how to play at all. We don't keep score (how does that even work?), and those little lines on the court mean nothing to us. We just try to thwack the ball back and forth as much as we can-- content with a good volley--and we inevitably end up doing a lot of running around. It's super fun! At this rate, we figure we might be ready to play a real game by September or so.
Tomorrow night it's dinner with girlfriends at Persimmon, a new spot for us all. Looks yummy! I will report.
People have asked, and the answer is no. I haven't cooked since the chicken piccata success. But, in my defense, my social calendar has been a bit full, so I haven't really been home. Translate: I'm so popular and busy I simply have no time or need to make my own food. Har har. Next up is a very detailed recipe for a delicious salad nicoise that my friend Sydney made for dinner one night. She even gave me very specific instructions for how to hard boil eggs. Smart woman.
My Be Nicer to Megan program continues with more small home improvement projects. I think I have a closeted decorator in me. Em gave me a cute little table she won't have room for in the new place, so I put it in the living room, bought a new lamp for it, and rearranged a bit. Also, I got new pillows for the couch, a shower curtain, and cute sheets I really, really love. I'm having fun, and it's great how a few minor changes can add fresh life to a place. But, I have to wonder, what's next?
