Over the past few weeks, a nearby theater has been showing the Indiana Jones movies at midnight on the weekends. Em and I went to see the first one a couple of weeks ago, which ended up being super fun, but it was also like seeing a whole new movie for me. It had been years, and I really couldn't remember a thing about it. Our convo in the ticket line:
Me: Do they eat brains in this one?
Em: No, that's the second.
Me: Do they rip out hearts in this one?
Em: No, second.
Me: Are there lots of bugs in this one?
Em: Nope. Second.
Me: Are there big spiders in this one?
Em: No, snakes.
Me: Oh.
It turns out there were big spiders. Ha! That's something I can't forget.
Anyway, clearly the gross out moments from the Temple of Doom stuck with me, so I was happy to miss it, but we plan to go to the Last Crusade tomorrow night. I'm excited! I know I liked that one. I don't remember much about it either, except for River Phoenix, who I loved as a kid and can't wait to see, no matter how briefly, on the big screen again.
There is something really great about seeing a midnight show. For Raiders of the Lost Ark, the theater was pretty full and lively--people were chatting up a storm beforehand--and we were giggly, finding things highly entertaining due to late night punchy-ness. The time went by really fast, in spite of how tired I was. This time I promised Em that she can have an aisle seat if we have to sit next to a bunch of drunkies. Stepping into the theater for the last show smelled like walking into a booze factory, and we ended up choosing seats next to a group of slightly obnoxious, and more than slightly drunk, boys in their early 20's. Shortly after the movie started, two of them started noisily play scuffling, and Em finally turned to give a stern "Hey! Stop it!" to the young whippersnappers. Of course, this was initially met with mocking "Yeah, Mike. Knock it off! Stop it Mike! Geez, Mike!" But, they settled down for a bit. Then a couple of them had to shuffle around to sloppily switch seats. A while later one of boys continuously crinkled his popcorn bag in a very loud and annoying manner, until I gave him a threatening point. Finally, the guy next to Em fell asleep and looked like he was going to tip over on to her at any moment. She was my buffer, and now it's my turn to step up.
Roof rat update: I haven't heard them for a few nights. I'm hoping they packed up their wall belongings and moved out.
Robert Redford turned 70 today! He may be getting older, but he is still foxy. Rarr!
And, rest in peace, Bruno Kirby. I will remember you forever for the great delivery of the line "Draw something resembling ANYTHING!" in When Harry Met Sally. It cracks me up every time. Just thinking about it makes me laugh.
