It's no longer January which means I must get my writing act together! Geezopete.
This week I saw THE BEST Nada Surf show yet at the Triple Door. It was really great. The theater is beautiful, the drinks and food are delish (especially the molten chocolate cake Monice and I shared), and one of my friends arrived early and got a booth for us right up front. It was a pretty perfect night. We all liked the opening band Port O'Brien too, although we think one or more members of the band has issues with working on a fishing boat in Alaska, because it seemed like quite a few songs at least mentioned revulsion for working on fishing boats in Alaska.
Nada Surf's new album Lucky comes out on Tuesday. You can listen to the whole thing on their MySpace page, and of course I must insist that you do! Normally, I'd want to list my favorite songs for you, but that's tough on this one. Everything including and in between See These Bones and I Like What You Say makes me incredibly happy, but I seriously like every single song. (Okay, I can't help it. My current faves slightly over the others are Beautiful Beat, Weightless, Are You Lightning and I Like What You Say. It may be because I liked them so much played live, though.) I've been listening to it over and over again at work over the past couple of days...and right now as a matter of fact.
"Behind every desire
is another one
waiting to be liberated
when the first ones sated."
Tonight I'm going to see Sky Cries Mary at the Audioasis show at the High Dive. I'm looking forward to it lots. I haven't been to an Audioasis show in a long while, and Sky Cries Mary is one of those bands I've had on my Must See Someday list.
Speaking of must sees, my movie buff friend WC brought Harold and Maude over the other night. It's one that always seems to appear on lists of Top Movies of All Time, so I was interested to check it out. It was cute, but I didn't love it. WC totally predicted that Harold and Maude would end up sleeping together, and I was all, "no, no, no." But then, he was right! I was surprised. I just didn't see the relationship heading that direction. I think that was the main issue that prevented me from loving it, because I usually adore quirky movies. It's not that I don't buy that there could be a sexual attraction between two people with a vast age difference; I just didn't feel like a sexual chemistry existed between these two characters. It didn't feel natural to the story, so it kind of lost me at that point. I think knowing the WC is going to be good for my movie education, though.
I'm doing pretty well with my French lessons, although I'm moving pretty slowly through the program at this point. At lunch time during the week, you can usually find me in my office repeating words like "Malade!" over and over again to my computer screen. Good times.
Oh, Mols and Trav are leaving Tahoe on the 8th and heading this direction. It sounds like they plan to settle in Portland, and I'll love having them closer. Zozo keeps insisting on "Go see Bacon!" so I hope to see them here very soon.
